Vale Jack Howson OBE JP

The WAOC and its partner office, the ACGA/WA acknowledges the passing of our esteemed past President Mr Jack Howson OBE JP on the 2nd February, 2011, aged 93.

Jack's contribution to the Olympic & Commonwealth Games Movement's in WA and Australia is significant and is duly recognised by his Life Membership of the AOC (1978), ACGA (1979), WAOC (1966) and ACGA/WA (1968).

On behalf of the Olympic & Commonwealth Games Family in Western Australia we acknowledge Jack for his tireless efforts in creating such strong foundations that have allowed the WAOC and the ACGA/WA to grow and to remain a respected and necessary part of the State and National sporting infrastructure.  We also extend our greatest sympathy to his wife Pat and extended family.

The WAOC and the ACGA / WA would like to acknowledge Jack's outstanding contribution across National and State Council/Federation level as well as Team and Games areas, along with his many other community and sporting contributions, and in particular his contribution within our Western Australia's Olympic & Commonwealth Games operations including:

  • Member of the WAOC Executive 1952 - 1985 having held the position of Hon Sec/Treasurer from 1952-1972 and then as President from 1972 - 1985.
  • Member of the ACGA/WA Executive from it's inception in 1952 - 1980, firstly as Hon Sec/Treasurer from 1952 - 1972 and then as President through until 1980.
  • Honorary Secretary - Organising Committee 1962 Commonwealth Games Perth from inception in 1959 - 1961
  • Honorary Director - 1962 Commonwealth Games Perth.

Nationally, Jack was an Executive of the Australian Olympic Federation (AOF) from 1960-1992 and amongst other Team Appointments was Chef de Mission of our Olympic Team for the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.

Uniquely, Jack held a position with both the 1956 Australian Olympic Team as Honorary Treasurer and as a Director of the 1956 Olympic Games held in Melbourne and as Member of the Organising Committee from 1952-1956 and Member of the Executive of the Games from 1954-1956.

Jack will be sorely missed and forever remembered.
