2009 International Pierre de Coubertin Youth Forum

Every two years, a student from Victoria is awarded the opportunity to represent Australia at the International Pierre de Coubertin Youth Forum. This forum is designed to bring students from around the world together to discuss various elements and issues regarding the Olympics and the Olympic Movement.

In 2007, we were fortunate enough to have two students represented from Victoria and once again in 2009 two students from Victoria were selected to attend the 2009 International Youth Forum held in Olympia, Greece. Congratulations to Jess Bagley from Sandringham College and Ryan Holloway from Warrandyte High School, joined by eight other students from around the country to represent Australia.

2009 Pierre de Coubertin Awards

Pierre de Coubertin Recipients at the Regional Awards and Olympic Academy with Jared Tallent and Stacy Roiall.

The Pierre de Coubertin Awards, an initiative of the Victorian Olympic Council and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, are named after Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the Modern Olympic Games. This year 150 students from years 10, 11 and 12, and their schools received this prestigious award.

On Saturday 30 May, nineteen students from Victoria attended the Regional Presentation and Olympic Academy at the University of Ballarat, giving the students the opportunity to have their family and teachers attend the ceremony as well as participate in the Olympic Academy; speaking intimately with Olympians; Jared Tallent (2008 20km Road Walk (Men) BRONZE, 50km Road Walk (Men) SILVER Medallist) and Stacy Roiall (2008 Trap Shooting).

The Metropolitan section was held on Sunday 31 May, at the Spot Theatre, University of Melbourne. The recipients were presented their awards by James Tomkins OAM (1988, 1992 GOLD, 1996 GOLD, 2000 BRONZE, 2004 GOLD, 2008 Rowing and 2008 Australian Olympic Team Flag Bearer) and Jacqui Cooper (1994, 1998, 2002, 2006 Freestyle Skiing, 2010 Prospective Team Member), allowing the opportunity to speak with both Olympians, encouraging them to achieve their goals and continue their positive contribution to sport.

What are the Pierre de Coubertin Awards?

The Pierre de Coubertin Awards are named after the founder of the modern Olympic Games and take place on an annual basis to recognise senior secondary students who demonstrate attributes consistent with Olympism through participation and commendable behaviour in sporting activities.

All secondary government and non government schools are invited to nominate one recipient from year 10, 11 or 12 for the Pierre de Coubertin Award each year. Each nominee must participate actively in the school’s physical education program with a consistently positive attitude and must have represented the school in a sport.

A piece of original art or literary work (for example – essay, poetry, sculpture, paintings etc) which demonstrates the student’s appreciation and understanding of the Olympic Movement must also be submitted.

Who is Baron Pierre de Coubertin?

Baron Pierre de Coubertin was born in Paris in 1863 and was an active sportsman involved in fencing, rowing and cycling. His visits to British “public” schools resulted in a lifelong interest in trying to get the heavily academic French schools to take up more sports-oriented curricula.

As an educational theorist, de Coubertin was convinced of the importance of sport for the development of the individual. He believed that the qualities of initiative, teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play should be encouraged in young people who participated in sports and competitive games.

His definition of Olympism had four principles that were far from a simple sports competition:

  1. To be a religion i.e. to "adhere to an ideal of a higher life, to strive for perfection"
  2. to represent an elite "whose origins are completely egalitarian" and at the same time "chivalry" with its moral qualities
  3. to create a truce "a four-yearly festival of the springtime of mankind"
  4. and to glorify beauty by the "involvement of the philosophic arts in the Games"

It is clear that the concept of the Olympic Games is far from a simple sports competition.
