2009 OCV Luncheon
Sunday 22 November 2009

Wayne Carroll (1984, 1988 Basketball), MC and Footy Superstar Sam Kekovich and Andris Blicavs (1976 Basketball) holding 'Old Friendly' donated to the club by Life Patron “Judy” Patching.

The Olympians Club of Victoria (OCV) hosted its very first luncheon this year at the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (rmys) – headquarters for the sailing events at the 1956 Olympic Games.

Throughout the luncheon guests were invited into the members' bar to view memorabilia of the 1956 Games.

We were grateful to the RMYS for making the venue available and were also delighted that the Commodore was able to be present.

Ian Chesterman, Chef de Mission of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Vancouver, gave a fantastic overview of the upcoming Games and Olympian John Konrads (1956, 1960, gold and dual bronze medallist, 1964) was also present to tell his story of 21 of his medals returned to him in September this year having been lost since April 1984.

The OCV would like to acknowledge Qantas, Fitness First, Fosters, Hockey Australia and the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant for kindly providing product and services and we thank them as well as Sam Kekovich as MC, Garth Ploog for the entertainment, our auctioneer Bill Wellwood and last but not least the OCV Committee Members for their continued contribution to the Club.

The OCV will be reverting back to dinners for the next three years leading up to the 2012 Olympic Games, London. We will use this occasion to Welcome Home the 2010 Australian Olympic Winter Team, celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the 1960 Olympic Games as well as the 10th and 30th Anniversaries of the 2000 and 1980 Olympic Games. For booking details please contact the VOC.

We hope to see you then!

Cheers,

Leon Wiegard OAM

Edwin Flack - The Lion of Athens

SPECIAL OFFER for Olympians and Officials!

Edwin Flack, The Lion of Athens is a fantastic read. It's about our very first Olympic hero, his early years as a runner in Melbourne before travelling to London for work experience as an accountant, then the long trip by trains, boats and carriages to Athens—he was a diarist and the author, Peter Sweeney, has included many of Flacks own journal entries in the book; his regular meetings with the Greek Royal family, the lead up to his two Gold and a Bronze medal and his attempts at the marathon and tennis in the 1896 Games.

Flack went on to become a significant Australian businessman and cattle breeder and left his fortune to Women's and Children's Charities.

Normally $25 it is available directly from the author to Olympians and Officials for ONLY $10 plus a charge for postage and handling which may vary.

For a copy please call Peter on 0408 272 783 and send cheque or money order attention to; Peter Sweeney, 8 Scanlan St BERWICK VIC 3806.

The Olympians of Australia announced who they believe are Australia's most outstanding Olympians of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

With such brilliant performances across a range of sports at the 2008 Olympic Games the voting was very tight with all Australian Olympians, both past and present, nominating their preferences.

It was always going to be difficult to pick the winner but Olympians Club of Australia President Leon Wiegard thought the outcome was as it should be.  'Hooker received 54% of the vote out of the five male nominees, Rice 42% out of six nominees and the great rowing pair of Ginn and Free received 31% of the vote from the six highly performed teams nominated.'
