Helen Brownlee OAM, President NSW Olympic Council presents a Life Membership to Doug Donoghue AM

Doug Donoghue AM - Life Membership

Doug Donoghue was awarded Life Membership of the New South Wales Olympic Council on the occasion of the NSWOC Annual General Meeting, 19 March 2012.

Doug’s involvement in sport stemmed from a keen interest in rowing as a competitor and coach at Sydney Boys High and Sydney Rowing Club. Alongside this he has enjoyed a long career in the oil industry where he became a Director of Ampol Ltd and a number of associated public companies.

Since 1993 Doug has been a Member of the Executive Board of the Australian Olympic Committee. He is currently the Chairman, AOC Finance Commission; Member, AOC Audit Committee; and Member, AOC Remuneration & Nominations Committee.

Since its inception in 1996, Doug has been a Director of the Australian Olympic Foundation Limited, a Member of the AOF Investment Advisory Committee and a Member of the AOF Audit Committee.

Doug has held the position of Vice President, NSW Olympic Council since 1993, having previously been an Executive Member since 1990.

In 1983 Doug became the Deputy Chair of the NSW Olympic Council’s dedicated Fundraising Committee - a position he still holds today - taking in Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012. During this time the NSW Olympic Council has raised in excess of $15 million for Australian Olympic Teams.

Doug is also a Member of the Venue Advisory Committee of Sydney International Regatta Centre; former Director of Rowing Australia, former Vice President of the NSW Rowing Association; previous Member of the Trust, State Sports Centre, and previous Member NSW Sports Advisory Council.

Prior to his role on the AOC’s Executive Board, Doug was a commentator for ABC Radio for rowing at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games and commentator for Network 10 television for rowing and canoeing at Los Angeles 1984, and for rowing at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games.

Doug played an integral role in two Olympic bids, initially as Director, European Liaison, ‘Melbourne Olympic Candidature 1996’ based in Paris 1989 – 1990 and then as a member of the successful ‘Sydney 2000’ Lobby Team, based in Paris from June – September 1993 to cover Europe.

Doug has been a major contributor to the day to day running of the NSW Olympic Council’s - and the AOC’s - financial and fundraising operations for over two decades. In so doing he has ensured the financial stability of the NSW Olympic Council and successful fundraising campaigns. Doug’s stewardship during this time has added immense value to successive and successful Australian Olympic Teams.
