Woods suffers eye jab

24 July 2012

WATER POLO: Soon to be quadruple Olympian Gavin Woods survived an injury scare at Tuesday morning's training session.

Woods received an accidental poke in the eye, and will be sporting an eye patch for the next two days.

The Australian team is not concerned about the injury and believe a couple of days rest will see Woods back in the pool.

"It was just a little poke in the eye," Woods said.

Head coach John Fox pointed out that Woods is unlikely to miss much pool time, with a short two day break scheduled in Bedford, north-west of the host city.

"He got a finger in the eye," Fox said.

"It will take a few days to recover, but we have two days off now. It was a cut to the white of his eye."

While the team heads to Bedford, Woods will recuperate at the Olympic Village.

Woods made his Olympic debut at the 2000 Sydney Games as a 22-year-old, and now sits as the team veteran.

His father, David, represented Australia at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics and his sister, Taryn, won gold in 2000.

Australia has been drawn in pool A and will face Italy in its opening game. The Aussies will also tackle Greece, Kazakhstan, Spain and Croatia.
