Wallace aims for World Cup hat-trick

23 May 2014

CANOE/KAYAK: Gold Coast paddler Ken Wallace will be looking at a hat-trick of Canoe World Cup gold medals this weekend when he competes in the grueling K1 5000 in Hungary.

But it's in the Olympic event, the K1 1000, that he wants most.

The Beijing K1 500 gold medallist won the 5000m event, the longest race on the canoe sprint program, at this year's opening World Cup events in Germany and Racice in the Czech Republic.

He also won silver in the K1 500 in Racice last weekend, and will contest the same distance this weekend.

The K1 1000 is most important to Wallace, though, being the only individual Olympic event he's competing in.

He won the B final in Racice, but will be hoping for a stronger performance this weekend.

Fellow Australian Murray Stewart is looking to improve on his 5th in last weekend's K1 1000m A final.

And Australia's Olympic gold medallists, the K4 1000 team, will have their second hitout of the international season in Hungary.

The crew of Tate Smith, Murray Stewart, Jacob Clear and David Smith faded to finish fifth in last weekend's race.

The Australian women's pairing of Jo Brigden-Jones and Naomi Flood will have only their second hitout in the K2 500.

Racing begins on Friday night (AEST).
