Two Bronze at Shanghai Diving World Cup

21 July 2014

DIVING: Australian divers have performed superbly at the premiere diving event on the 2014 calendar picking up two bronze, two fourth places and several other finalists, just over two years out from the Rio Olympic Games.

Dual Olympian Melissa Wu won bronze at the World Cup in Shanghai, rocketing her to favouritism for gold in the platform event at this month's Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Wu was beaten into third by Chinese pair Huang Xiaohui and Liu Huixia.

With one dive to go Wu was in the silver medal position and less than four points from the gold, but the Chinese divers both posted near-perfect final dives in front of their home crowd.

Another Australian, Lara Tarvit, showed she is also a strong medal prospect for Glasgow by finishing eighth.

Wu's bronze medal was the second medal for Australia in Shanghai, after Anabelle Smith and Maddison Keeney combined to win bronze in the 3-metre synchro earlier in the week.

18-year-old Keeney from Perth also placed an outstanding fourth in the 3-metre springboard. She found herself in 10th position after a mistake on her second dive but underlined her potential with three top class final dives to finish just out of the medals.

Her duel with Canada's Jennifer Abel will be one of the battles of the Glasgow Games after the Canadian finished third, with Chinese divers finishing first and second.

Wu and Rachel Bugg were also standouts at the premier diving event on the 2014 calendar. The pair was 4th in the platform synchro.

Australia’s sole male diver at the event was Grant Nel who made the final of the 3-metre springboard. 2008 Olympic champion Matthew Mitcham missed the Shanghai World Cup to concentrate on the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
