Sports confirmed for Buenos Aires 2018

5 June 2018

BUENOS AIRES 2018: The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has confirmed the 27 sports that will feature Australian athletes at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

The AOC is expecting to take around 95 athletes to the third edition of the Summer YOG in the Argentinian capital in October, with the largest teams to come from Hockey 5s (18) and Athletics (12).

Australia will be represented in both male and female Hockey 5s after the teams topped the Oceania qualifiers in Papua New Guinea in April.

There will also be green and gold representation in the female 3x3 Basketball event, making its YOG debut. With 3x3 added to the Summer Olympic programme for the first time at Tokyo 2020, Buenos Aires will be an ideal opportunity to put the urban sport in the spotlight.

To boost excitement for the new discipline, in addition to the male and female tournament, there will be a dunk contest for the men and a shoot-out contest for the women.

Continuing the new sport theme, Australia will be represented in the new Tokyo 2020 sports of Sport Climbing and Karate. Roller Speed Skating will also be on show for the first time at a YOG, with Aussies hoping to qualify quota places for the event at the 2018 World Speed Skating Championships in July.

Australia will be well represented in the more traditional sports of Swimming, Archery, Shooting, Table Tennis and Triathlon; however, these sports will take on a contemporary twist at YOG with the addition of either a mixed international event or a mixed relay event on the programme.

The first Australian athletes to be selected for Buenos Aires 2018 will be announced this week, with selection announcements continuing until the end of August 2018.

4000 athletes aged 15-18 from 206 countries will compete across 32 sports over the 10 days of competition in Buenos Aires. Find out more about the 2018 Youth Olympic Games HERE  and check out the official Games website HERE.
