Schipper fully recovered for London

19 July 2012

Butterfly veteran Jess Schipper has made a full recovery from a recent health scare in time for the London Olympics.

Schipper needed emergency surgery on an ovarian cyst in May after being rushed to hospital complaining of severe abdominal pain.

The problem kept her out of the pool for several weeks but she has been back in full training for the past month and her coach Stephan Widmar said she was looking good for London.

Widmar said he'd had to modify Schipper's training program slightly, and decrease her workload as she recovered, but said his charge was now showing impressive speed in the pool.

Schipper won bronze in both the 100m and 200m butterfly in Beijing four years ago and will contest both events again in London.

Her coach said she was tough enough to overcome a disrupted preparation.

"She's a great fighter and I don't wish it on anyone what she had to go through," Widmar said as Schipper joined Australia's training camp in Manchester.

"She is such a great racer, mentally strong.

"It's unfortunate she had to deal with this but she's very strong in her mind."
