Persistent Aussies on the right track

24 September 2017

VOLLEYBALL: Australia women’s volleyball coach Shannon Winzer believes the Volleyroos are on the right track following the World Championship qualifiers in Kazakhstan.

The Aussie women lost their final match to Olympic gold medallists, China, 25-15, 25-6, 25-20, leaving the Australians with one win and three losses.

“The game was a chance for us to evaluate ourselves against the best,” Winzer said.

“And except for the second set we competed with them. China are an impressive team, they are very big and very skilled and very deserving of the top ranking.

“To take as many points off them as we did was impressive. Although it's a loss to finish the competition and the international season, it was a gutsy effort and a very high level of volleyball on both sides.”

Winzer said there are good signs for the future, with several players about to head overseas to take up international contracts, and with the Centre of Excellence in Canberra about to head into its second season.

The Australian team needed to finish in the top two in their group to qualify for next year's World Championships in Japan.

After a loss to Chinese Taipei they defeated Fiji before going down to the two teams that finished at the top of the group in China and Kazakhstan.
