NBL rookies to take on China
6 June 2013
BASKETBALL: The Boomers have selected a 12-man squad featuring six rookies for Friday night's basketball clash with China at Perth Arena.
With Australia unable to consider a host of their overseas stars, new coach Andrej Lemanis has been forced to pick the majority of his squad from NBL ranks.
The Adelaide 36ers are the best represented of the NBL clubs despite finishing last on the table, with 2012 London Olympian Adam Gibson joined by teammates Jason Cadee, Anthony Petrie and Daniel Johnson.
Petrie, who turned 30 on Monday, is in line to make his Boomers debut, along with teammate Johnson, Cairns sharpshooter Cameron Gliddon and Tigers guard Chris Goulding.
College duo Cameron Bairstow and Igor Hadziomerovic are also in line for senior debuts.
The likes of Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills, Brad Newley, Aleks Maric, Joe Ingles, Matt Nielsen, David Andersen and David Barlow were unavailable for the series.
In contrast, China's 16-man squad consists of 10 players who featured at the London Olympics.
Five-time Olympian Zhizhi Wang, a 214cm centre who spent time with NBA outfits Dallas, Los Angeles and Miami, headlines the squad, while Yue Sun also boasts NBA experience after a short stint with the LA Lakers.
The match will be the first in charge for new Boomers mentor coach Lemanis, a three-time NBL championship-winning coach who beat out former Wildcats manager Rob Beveridge for the top job.
China also features a new coach in the form of Greek legend Panagiotis Giannakis.
The Boomers will take on China in Perth on Friday and Sunday, before the series switches to China for the final two games of the series.
