Gold and Australian record for To

SWIMMING: Last year’s FINA World Cup champion Kenneth To has started his 2013 campaign in fine form picking up gold and an Australian record at the Eindhoven World Cup in the Netherlands overnight.

A silver medallist in the 100m IM yesterday, To set a new Australian record to win the 200m IM last night, hitting the wall in 1:52.40 with NSWIS swimmer Daniel Tranter taking silver in 1:53.43.

Rising sprint star Emma McKeon from Wollongong posted the second fastest 100m freestyle time ever by an Australian over the short course format, picking up silver in an impressive 51.99.

The 19-year-old surpassed Cate Campbell as Australia’s second fastest for all time, just behind Libby Trickett (51.01), with Brittany Elmslie eighth in 53.33.

Fresh from a Commonwealth record in the women’s 200m IM yesterday, Emily Seebohm won silver in the women’s 100m backstroke in a time of 57.28. A silver medallist in the 200m in Barcelona, Belinda Hocking was second in 57.38 with Meagen Nay sixth in 58.98.

Victorian Ellen Gandy continued to impress at her first meet for Australia winning silver in the women’s 200m butterfly in 2:03.95 behind Katinka Hosszu form Hungary (2:03.67). Gandy was sixth in the 50m fly with Elmslie seventh.

A gold medallist in the 100m backstroke yesterday, Ashley Delaney added bronze in the men’s 200m backstroke in a time of 1:50.47 with Mitchell Larkin finishing fifth overall in 1:50.79.

Australia also took gold in the mixed 4x50m freestyle relay with the team of Matthew Abood, James Magnussen, Elmslie and McKeon winning by more than a second in 1:29.31.

In other events Seebohm finished fifth in the 100m IM in 59.28, Jessica Ashwood was seventh in the women’s 400m freestyle in 4:04.83, while Sally Foster finished eighth in the women’s 50m breaststroke in 30.64.

The Australian contingent will now head to Berlin for the second leg of the FINA World Cup Series starting on Saturday.
