Fresh faced judokas join Olympians for Glasgow

2 June 2014

JUDO: Two teenagers have been named in a fresh-faced line-up to represent Australia in judo at the Commonwealth Game,s following the sport's 12-year absence from the competition.

Queensland's Chloe Rayner, 17, and Victoria's Jake Bensted, 19, will compete in the 48kg and 73kg respectively in Glasgow as two of nine judoka without previous major Games experience.

Mark Anthony, 24, is the most seasoned in the 13-strong squad announced on Friday, having competed at the previous two Olympics. He is joined by London Olympics teammate Ivo Dos Santos.

Head coach Dennis Iverson rates Anthony as the team's best medal chance as it aims for between four to six podium spots, given his seventh-placed finish in London.

But Iverson also expects the younger judoka, including Rayner, to hold their own.

"For 17, she's actually done more tournaments than anyone else her age so I think she will be OK," he told AAP.

"She's going to struggle in some areas, but she'll also succeed in others.

"So for her it's a learning curve to experience a Commonwealth Games at this age."

The last time judo was an event at the Commonwealth Games - in Manchester 2002 - Rayner was only five years old.

Australia claimed its first gold medals in the event in Manchester, with Maria Pekli taking out the women's 57kg division and Tom Hill triumphing in the men's 73kg.

Iverson said he expected England, Scotland, Wales and Canada would be the toughest competition.

The Games' knockout-style tournament will take place from July 24-26.

Australia: Men: Tom Pappas (60kg), Ivo Dos Santos (66kg), Arnie Dickins (73kg), Jake Bensted (73kg), Mark Anthony (90kg), Duke Didier (100kg). Women: Chloe Rayner (48kg), Amy Meyer (48kg), Hannah Trotter (52kg), Katharina Haecker (63kg), Sara Collins (70kg), Catherine Arscott (70kg)
