Fox sisters paddling up a storm

22 April 2014

CANOE-SLALOM: There's another teen Fox set to take the whitewater kayak world by storm.

Olympic silver-medallist Jess Fox's kid sister Noemie, 17, will share centre-stage at this week's world under-23 and junior championships at Penrith.

Jess, the senior world C1 champion, will go into the under-23 titles as favourite for both the K1 (kayak) and C1 (canoe) events on her home slalom course.

But the attention of proud parents and coaches Myriam and Richard, both former world champions, will be split with France-born Noemie to contest her second world junior title.

Two years younger than Jessica, she's been a late-bloomer in comparison but showed her pedigree with a fifth placing in the K1 at this year's Australian Open.

"I suppose she's on a more modest trajectory but Noemie is carving her own journey in the sport," Richard told AAP. "We don't look for direct comparisons.

"She's improving well and it's step by step.

"At this age we're encouraging the experience as much as the result."

Both Foxes will be in action in heats on the opening day of the titles on Wednesday.

While Noemie competes in the junior women's K1, Jess starts her campaign in the under-23 K1 with a point to prove after bombing out of the event last year, finishing 18th.

"I've got some unfinished business," the 19-year-old said.

"Last year the K1 didn't quite go to plan or how I would have liked, I was really disappointed with that result."

Representing Australia in the U23s women's race alongside Jess Fox will be fellow Penrith paddler Alison Borrows and West Australian Georgia Rankin.

In August Jess Fox will be the ambassador for the Australian team at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China around her international competition commitments.
