Fox adds final script to best 2017 canoe slalom weekend so far

3 July 2017

CANOE SLALOM: Jessica Fox completed her most successful ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup weekend for 2017 on Sunday when she won silver behind Germany’s Ricarda Funk in the women’s K1 in Markkkleeberg.

It followed her barnstorming gold in the C1 24 hours earlier, and adds to the C1 gold she won in Augsburg last weekend.

Fox ran into some trouble in the middle of the tricky Markkleeberg course, but recovered to post a clean run to move to the top of the leaderboard.

Her time of 106.31 kept her in the gold medal position until Funk made it two K1 gold medals in a row, in a whirlwind 103.85.

“Ricarda has been in phenomenal form so far, another medal today, and an amazing run,” Fox said.

“I’m very happy with second place, a little bit disappointed because I lost a bit of time on gate nine, but still happy to back up after yesterday and make the podium in K1.”

Markkleeberg lived up to its reputation as a challenging course, with every athlete arriving at the finish physically exhausted.

“It’s very technical, very physical,” Fox said.

“I took a few more risks in the final today, and they kind of paid off. Gates 6, 7 and 8 I opted for a tighter line and it was faster, but then I lost time after that and just fought to the finish.

“It was so hard on the arms, but I’m really happy to finish the way that I did.”

Fox will now turn her attention to the U23 World Championships in Bratislava next month, before the final two World Cups and the 2017 World Championships in France.
