Double silver for Fox in Spain caps off massive World Cup season

CANOE - SLALM: Dual Olympic medallist Jess Fox has claimed silver medals in both the C1 and K1 events at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup final in Spain.

The C1 result ensured that Fox cemented her title as the most consistent C1 paddler in the world this year.

Fox went into the World Cup having won her last three C1 World Cup events, but had her colours lowered by Spain’s Nuria Villarubla in Saturday’s final at La Seu d’Urgell, the home of canoe slalom at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Fox was 2.52 seconds behind the home town favourite after she secured 4 penalties. 

“It was a very challenging final, I had some penalties there and it was tough work all the way down,” Fox said.

“I’m really happy to take the overall title. Last year I wasn’t able to race all the races in C1 because I was preparing for the Games, so to be back in the C1 boat for every race was awesome.

“I was consistently up there with the fastest times, which is a great confidence boost heading into the World Championships later this month.”

She returned on Sunday to compete in the K1 final where it was German Ricarda Funk who took the victory 0.81 seconds ahead of Fox with Spaniard Maialen Chourraut with the bronze.

Fellow Australian Rosalyn Lawrence placed 11th in the semi-final to just miss out on the 10-woman final.Lawrence also placed 18th in the C1 event. 

Rio 2016 Olympian Lucien Delfour bowed out in the men's K1 semi-finals after finishing 16th.
