Coates, Thorpe lead 20 Olympic Champions at Murray Rose Tribute Dinner

AOC: Australian swimming legend, Murray Rose AM was honoured and celebrated at an exclusive Tribute Dinner in his namesake on Tuesday 26 November 2013 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney.

John Coates AC, President of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) hosted the function and was joined by dozens of Olympians – including over 20 gold medallists from Melbourne 1956 – London 2012.

In what was an incredible reunion of the Olympic and swimming fraternity, Australia’s most successful Olympian, Ian Thorpe OAM was MC, joined by Olympic champions Dawn Fraser AO MBE, Herb Elliot AC MBE, Shane Gould MBE, John Devitt AM, John Konrads, Grant Hackett OAM, Kerry-Ann Pottharst OAM, Dean Lukin OAM, Mark Kerry, Mark Tonelli, Chris Fydler OAM, Tom King OAM, Malcolm Page OAM, David Smith, Murray Stewart and more.

At the other end of the spectrum were budding Olympic hopefuls such as teenager Mack Horton - the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival 1500m Champion and multiple Junior World Championship medallist.

Rose passed away in April 2012, leaving an incredible legacy. A 400m and 1500m Olympic freestyle champion, Murray rewrote the world record books 15 times. His extraordinary performances at the Melbourne 1956 and Rome 1960 Olympic Games saw Murray emerge as a national sporting icon.

Rose’s remarkable feats inspired a generation of Australian sporting champions and helped to establish swimming as one of the premier sports in Australia.

Funds raised from the night were donated to Murray Rose’s family - his wife Jodi and son Trevor Rose.
