Buchanan back with BMX World Cup win

22 April 2014

CYCLING-BMX: Caroline Buchanan has delivered a clear message to her rivals, returning from a year's absence to win the opening round of BMX cycling's World Cup series in Manchester, England.

The 23-year-old world champion from Canberra admitted to some nerves but dominated to qualify fastest for the final then led from start to finish to win from American Brooke Crain and Venezuala's Stefany Hernandez.

"There were some nerves because at the beginning of the year you don't know who did their homework in the off season, but I came prepared," said Buchanan.

"Staying on the bike was important. Some people got hurt, but that's why we love BMX, otherwise we'd be running in between some white lines or something."

Disappointed by her fifth placing when favoured to win gold at the London Olympics, Buchanan took a year out from BMX World Cup competition - racing only the world titles in New Zealand and winning - and returned to her mountain biking background, claiming a world title at the World Four Cross championships in Austria.

But she's ready to contest the full BMX World Cup series in 2014 and has already put the competition on notice as she aims to make amends at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

"Winning never gets boring, it's always a challenge," said Buchanan.

It was a good day for Australia, with powerhouse rider Anthony Dean of Adelaide finishing second in the men's event behind Britain's Liam Phillips and ahead of Canada's Tory Nyhaug.
