Brennan wins US regatta

ROWING: Australia's Olympic rowing champion Kim Brennan has had one of the biggest paydays of her career, pocketing $10,000 in a prestigious American regatta.

Brennan, who won gold in the single scull in Rio in August, claimed the prize in the Gold Cup event at the Head of the the Schuylkill in Philadelphia.

The annual race, which dates back to 1920, attracts the cream of world rowing including most recent Olympic medallists.

The rowers compete over 750m rather than the usual two kilometres.

In the women's race, the Olympic form held, with Brennan comfortably taking first.

Long-time rival Kiwi Emma Twigg, who finished fourth in Rio, picked up $5,000 for second while American Gevvie Stone took third and $2,000.

It's the third successive year that Brennan has won the event.

The men's race drew Olympic scull gold medallist veteran Mahe Drysdale and silver medal-winning Croatian Damir Martin, who the Kiwi pipped by just 5/1000th of a second.

While he missed the gold medal in Rio, Martin got the main prize this time, collecting the $10,000.

Norwegian Olympic bronze medallist and 2015 champion Kjetil Borch finished second, with Croatia's Martin Sinkovic third and Drysdale earning $1000 for fourth.

Brennan, 31, is yet to decide on her future, tossing up whether to retire or continue on to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
