Bogut 50-50 for basketball's World Cup

14 April 2014

BASKETBALL: Andrew Bogut rates himself a 50-50 chance of leading Australia at the basketball World Cup in Spain later this year.

The 213cm tall centre says his health is good and a final decision will be made after his season with the NBA playoff-bound Golden State Warriors ends.

"It's a 50-50 call at the moment," Bogut told AAP.

If Bogut suits up for Australia at the 2014 FIBA World Cup in August the Boomers will be a serious threat to win a medal.

Three other NBA players, Patty Mills, Aron Baynes and Matthew Dellavedova, expected top five NBA Draft pick Dante Exum and US college star Cameron Bairstow are committed to play.

Bogut's focus, however, is on the Warriors' march into the playoffs.

They secured a spot in the post season on Friday with an easy 112-95 victory against the injury-ravaged Los Angeles Lakers and are focused on winning their final three regular season games to avoid first round match-ups with top-ranked Mills and Baynes's San Antonio Spurs or Kevin Durant's Oklahoma City Thunder.

Ironically, a long, successful run by the Warriors in the playoffs could damage Bogut's chances of suiting up for the Boomers.

"I'll make a decision at the end of the season, depending how deep we go in the playoffs and how my body feels," Bogut, who credits last year's offseason of rest and rehab on a fractured ankle the key to his health this season, said.

"It's a matter of being smart personally.

"I've always said the Olympics in 2016 is my main goal, and everything between that is half and half for me."
