Bertrand congratulates Thorpe

14 July 2014

SWIMMING: Swimming Australia President John Bertrand, on behalf of the board and the Australian swimming community, has congratulated Ian Thorpe, on his courageous interview with Sir Michael Parkinson on Network Ten last night.

Speaking about his battle with depression and suicidal thoughts, his sexuality, and his passion for working within the indigenous community as part of the Ian Thorpe Fountain for Youth, Bertrand said Thorpe was courageous to speak so publicly.

“The fact that one of our greatest Olympic athletes has been so honest sets a precedent in this country for more open dialogue,” said Bertrand.

“It was great to see Ian looking so happy and healthy during the interview, after what has clearly been a difficult year for him with injury and illness.”

“His bravery and honesty will inspire many Australians, just like he did in the pool, and our team is really looking forward to catching up with him in Glasgow over the coming weeks at the Commonwealth Games.”

As one of Australia’s most decorated Olympians, Thorpe won a total of five Olympic gold medals and first represented Australia as a 14-year-old at the 1997 Pan Pacific Championships in Japan.

He won a total of 10 gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, and 11 medals in total, and it will be great to have him on pool deck when Australia wins its 600th Commonwealth Games medal in the pool in Scotland.

The 31-year-old will join Network Ten’s coverage of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow starting on July 23 with the Australian Swim Team in action from July 24-29.
