NANJING 2014: Australian Olympic medallists Susie O’Neill (Swimming) and Jessica Fox (Canoe/Kayak) are in Nanjing, China this week for official meetings prior to the start of the second summer Youth Olympic Games, taking place in the city from 16 – 28 August 2014.
Recognised as Madame Butterfly during her gold medal winning days, O’Neill is now Chef de Mission of the 2014 Australian Youth Olympic Team.
While in Nanjing, O’Neill will attend the Chef de Mission seminar, meeting representatives from the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (NYOGOC), the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
“I am looking forward to meeting delegates from the NYOGOC and other National Olympic Committees as well as touring the venues,” O’Neill said.
The multiple Olympic medallist will receive updates from NYOGOC about the organisation of the Youth Olympics as well as tour the Youth Olympic Village, the Olympic Sports Centre and the Culture and Education venue.
“The Chef’s meeting is a key opportunity for the AOC to ask any outstanding questions so as to finalise the Team’s operations.
“It will be good to see where the venues are and how organised the Games will be.”
Fox, who won gold in Canoe/Kayak at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010 and went on to win a silver Medal at the London Olympic Games, has been appointed Young Ambassador to the Australian Team.
The Penrith local will attend the Young Ambassadors seminar in Nanjing, meeting other Young Ambassadors from around the world and learning more about her role for the Youth Olympics.
“This is a great opportunity for Jess for to meet other Young Ambassadors,” O’Neill said.
“Our meetings will cross over and so we should have the opportunity to catch up and exchange information,” she said.
One of Fox’s roles will be to encourage team members to participate in the Culture and Education Program (CEP) at the conclusion of their competition.
The CEP facilitates athlete participation in activities which enables them to grow in their sporting career and promotes a healthy lifestyle.
Fox will have the opportunity to participate in select CEP activities and provide feedback on her experience.
The Chef de Mission Seminar runs from 26-28 March 2014 at the Fairmont Hotel in Jianye District Nanjing. The Young Ambassadors Seminar takes place in the same district at the HanYueLou Hotel from 25-28 March 2014.
