Aussie women take down Brazil in Sydney's west

17 September 2017

FOOTBALL: Coach Alen Stajcic has declared Matildas Sam Kerr, Lisa De Vanna and Caitlin Foord the most forbidding attacking trio in women's world soccer.

World player of the year nominee Kerr and Australia's all-time record scorer De Vanna both contributed goals to Saturday's 2-1 friendly win over Brazil.

The pair combined fluently with Foord at a sold-out Pepper Stadium in Penrith, surging forward to keep their South American visitors on their toes.

And though Stajcic lamented his team's inability to put away more of their 23 shots, it didn't detract from how lethal he believed his front-third force could be.

"I think Sam, Caitlin and her (De Vanna) really compliment each other well and probably make us the most threatening front three in the world," Stajcic said.

His remarks followed the Matildas' fourth-straight win after their Tournament of Nations triumph - which included a first-ever scalp of the US and wins against Brazil and Japan - captured the nation's imagination.

On Saturday, De Vanna pleased more than 15,000 fans with a stunning volley that Stajcic revealed had been in the works all week.

"She's scored a goal like that for South Melbourne last week," he said.

"I was having a joke around with her that it doesn't count at that level, she's got to reproduce it at this level. And it was an almost identical volley.

"She says she's old but she's only 32 and I still think she's got lots of years left in her.

"We saw how explosive and dangerous she is, her workrate to get back and make tackles."
