Aussie Short Track campaign concludes

22 February 2017

SHORT TRACK: Australia's short track speed skaters have wrapped up their Asian Winter Games (AWG) campaign competing in today's final events, the men's and women's 1,000 metres.

Deanna Lockett's day ended in the quarter finals after she had a fall while attempting a pass in the final stages of her race. It wasn't the way the 21-year-old wanted to finish the meet but she was able to take positives from her AWG experience.

“I’m racing really good and I’m more aggressive, it’s just unfortunate that I fell and the race got stopped,” Lockett said.

“I couldn’t re-run the race anyway as I bruised my knee but I’m happy with my racing.”

It is onwards and upwards for Lockett who now turns her attention to the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships which are to be held in Rotterdam (NED) from 10-12 March.

“I’m going to have to rest my knee for a few days but then I’ll get back into training.

“The results here don’t show it but I’ve been racing well and I think that’s what’s most important."

In the men's event Aussies Pierre Boda, Andy Jung and Alex Bryant also made it through to the quarter finals but finished outside the placings so did not progress further.

Reflecting on his Asian Winter Games experience, Boda said he enjoyed being part of a multi-sport Australian team.

“Just being around other sports made it feel like an Olympics, like a warm-up to the actual Games,” Boda said.

“It feels like such a big event. We’re racing the same people as we do at World Cups but this event felt more important, a lot bigger.”

Boda is also feeling positive ahead of the World Championships.

“I’ve had okay results so I’m happy with that and it’s been a good warm-up for the Worlds. This has been our first comp in over two months, I feel like I was a bit rusty for racing but now should be ready.

“I feel a lot more switched on now, compared to the first day of racing.”
