Aussie divers deliver medals in Canada

10 April 2017

DIVING: Dual Olympian Anabelle Smith has won a silver medal in the women’s springboard diving final at a FINA Grand Prix event in Gatineau, Canada, on the weekend.

The 2016 Olympic bronze medallist also picked up a bronze medal in the women’s 3-metre springboard synchro final, diving alongside Queensland teenager, Georgia Sheehan.

Smith won bronze alongside Western Australian, Maddison Keeney, in the 3-metre springboard synchro in Rio.

The Victorian said while she was pleased to win silver, she was also happy with the way she has progressed as a diver.

“Not necessarily winning silver, but I was proud of my performance because I took on what the coaches were telling me and improved each round,” Smith said.

“It gives me my confidence back in individual events, that I can compete my dives like I train.

“And doing synchro with Georgia was a fun experience and it allows me to show my adaptability.”

There was a second silver medal for Australia in Gatineau, with Sheehan and Adelaide teenager, Matthew Carter, finishing just behind Canada in the mixed springboard synchro.

Also adding to Australia’s medal tally were three-time Olympian, Melissa Wu, and Adelaide’s Taneka Kovchenko in the women’s platform synchro, where they finished third, before Wu also teamed up with former elite gymnast, Declan Stacey, to win bronze in the mixed platform synchro.
