AOC welcomes IOC decision for the proposed dual-appointment of the 2024 and 2028 Games

AOC: The Australian Olympic Committee has welcomed the foresight of the International Olympic Committee’s decision to pave the way to simultaneously appoint the host cities of the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympic Games.
Bid committees from Paris and Los Angeles, along with the IOC, will now meet to see if they can come to a mutual decision to figure out who will host the 2024 and 2028 Games.
Both cities have presented strong bids, utilising a significant amount of current infrastructure reducing costs while focusing on sustainability and a long lasting post-Games legacy.
In congratulating the IOC, AOC Chief Executive Matt Carroll said the decision was not just a great initiative for the Olympic Games but was of great benefit to our member sports.
“Knowing where the Games are going to be held so far in advance will significantly assist high performance planning to support our athletes, current and future.
“Equally of importance, the initiative enhances the AOC commercial program’s prospects which ensures the ongoing support of athletes and covering the expenses of the Australian Team,” Carroll added.
“We will work with our members sports to look for opportunities to also support their high performance and community programs.”
On behalf of the AOC Carroll congratulated AOC President and IOC Vice President John Coates who played a key role in helping to get the decision across the line.
While the South East Queensland potential bid to host the 2028 Games may need to refocus to 2032, this should not be seen as a disappointment as the initiative gives the cities more time to develop a strong bid to return the Games to Australian shores for a third time.
"Realistically, Brisbane at this point is significantly inferior to Paris: Paris has got 92 per cent, and Los Angeles has got 100 per cent of the infrastructure, venues and village accommodation in place," Coates told The Australian.
"If we had put up Brisbane for 2028 under the old system it would have cost AUD$60 million to bid."
If an agreement is reached by the bid committees and the IOC both the 2024 and 2028 hosts will be announced at the 131st IOC Session in Lima, Peru which runs from September 13 -17.
If an agreement is not reached then the 2024 Games host city will be voted upon and announced by itself.
