28 February 2006
Aerialist Jacqui Cooper and speed skater Steven Bradbury have been selected for the AOC Athletes Commission following the elections held in the Team Villages of the Torino Winter Games.
Cooper, a veteran of the Winter Olympics, was voted to remain on the Athletes Commission.
2002 Salt Lake gold medallist Steven Bradbury was elected for the first time. He replaces Adrian Costa who represented Australia in freestyle skiing at four Olympic Winter Games.
'Steven has remained very much involved with winter sport and will be a major plus for the Athletes Commission" said AOC Secretary - General Craig Phillips.
The two new members were elected by the athletes from the 2006 Winter Olympic Team. Their role is to advise the AOC on all matters relating to the Olympic Movement from an athlete’s perspective.
In total, 10 athletes serve the AOC Athletes Commission; two are elected from the Winter Games and eight from the Summer Games. The athletes are members of the Commission for the four years.
Also, Australia finished 17th on the medal tally with one gold medal and one bronze. Germany finished first on the medal tally with a total of 29 medals; 11 gold, 12 silver and six bronze.
