Cold War

Cold War and the 1980 Moscow Olympics

The Olympic Games have been subject to a number of boycotts for political reasons. The 1980 and 1984 Olympics were controversial because of the particular connection with Cold War rivalry between the USA and its allies and the Soviet Union and its allies. Australia was caught up in these controversial issues. In 1980 the Australian Olympic Federation decided in a split vote to attend the Games, but some sport federations and athletes were pressured into boycotting the Games and a team of 204 athletes became a team of 127 athletes.
