Introduction
The 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne were the first Olympic Games in Oceania and the third Olympics since the end of the Second World War. Although thousands of kilometers from Europe it was influenced by the Cold War rivalries and still called the ‘Friendly Games’.
Forty four years later Sydney hosted the next Olympic Games in 2000. The world was approaching a new millennium and Sydney rose to the occasion.
