Aussies challenge for Burghley title

3 September 2015

EQUESTRIAN: A host of Australians are among the 74 horse and rider combinations from ten nations lining up for a shot at the 2015 Burghley Horse Trials title.

London Olympian Sam Griffiths, who was third at this event in 2014 has entered two of his top rides – Happy Times who is a two time podium placegetter at this event, and Paulank Brockagh, the mare with which he partnered to win the 2014 Badminton Horse Trials.

“I’ve got two classy horses and both have been around this course here,” said Griffiths.

“They’re in good form but I’ve just walked the course and it’s tough out there, probably the toughest I’ve seen in a long time.

"I think it’s going to be a really tough jumping competition so hopefully the horses are in good form and they’re jumping can shine through.”

At Wednesday’s horse inspection Paul Tapner was another of the Aussies that everyone had their eyes on. Tapner also has two horses entered – his World Equestrian Games horse Kilronan as well as the mare Vanir Kamira which is stepping out at 4 star level for the first time.

“It’s definitely the first time that I’ve ever come to Burghley in the weeks leading up thinking these horses are ready,” said Tapner

“All of their training and preparation has been spot on. And I always say if you’ve got a plan A preparation coming into an event then you’ve got a chance of winning.”

Seven-time Olympian Andrew Hoy and his London Olympic horse Rutherglen will be aiming to maintain the form they displayed in winning the Haras du Pin CIC3* a fortnight ago. Hoy is a two time champion of this event winning with Davey back in 1979 and Moon Fleet in 2004 and has started this year's event on a positive note by taking out best dressed at the horse inspection.

London Olympian Chris Burton will ride Haruzac as well as TS Jamaimo while 2014 World Equestrian Games representative Bill Levett has entered Improvise.

Brothers Murray and Warren Lamperd complete Australia’s line-up, with Murray and his ride Under the Clocks up first for the Aussies when competition gets underway on Thursday. Warren will ride the horse Silvia.

Competition begins Thursday and runs through until Sunday. Draws, results and more news available at the event website:http://www.burghley-horse.co.uk/
