Aussie team announced for World Champs

The Australian women’s team to contest the World Championship was announced last week and is co-captained by Tanya Harding (QLD) and Natalie Ward (NSW). There are only two new additions to the Aussie Spirit team which won the 2006 Canada Cup.

The 2006 International Softball Federation (ISF) XI Women’s World Championship will be held from August 27 - September 5 in Beijing, China, in the newly-built Fengtai Softball Field, the same site for the Beijing Olympic Games.

16 teams will compete in the Championship with the top four teams automatically qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Australia will compete against Japan, Chinese Taipei, Greece, Venezuela, Netherlands, Botswana and Colombia in Pool B.

Aussie Spirit is aiming to do very well at the event after recent successful international performances. The team defeated Canada 6-4 to win the 2006 Canada Cup only to lose to the same team in the US World Cup, where they finished in fourth place.
