Diamond may consider retiring after Rio

6 August 2015

SHOOTING: Veteran trap shooter Michael Diamond has revealed he will consider retiring after next year's Rio Olympics if he wins a third gold medal.

The 43-year-old has been to every Games since his debut in Barcelona and is on the verge of equalling equestrian rider Andrew Hoy's record of seven appearances.

While team selection is still months away, Diamond is "quietly confident" of a berth following a successful World Cup campaign.

He hopes to continue that form in Brazil and add to his 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympic titles.

"To try and nail a third one would be a huge thing for me and could possibly ring retirement bells," he told AAP.

"I'm not sure whether I would or wouldn't if I won a third one at Rio, because I love my sport so much.

"And for me not to be doing it, it'll feel like something was missing.

"But I would have to consider it and maybe take on another role."

Diamond believes he has a real shot at another gold, despite the growing competition.

He won silver at the ISSF World Cup in Acapulco, Mexico, in March to earn Australia a high-contested quota for Rio in the men's trap event.

"I'm still winning medals around the world in a larger field than the Olympics," he said.

"So to go to an Olympic Games where there's only three-quarters of the field, it's actually easier to win an Olympic medal than what it is to go to a World Cup or a world championships and try to win a medal.

"I'm still doing that and I feel very confident that I may be able to get lucky on this next one."

Diamond heads to Europe next week for the ISSF World Cup in Azerbaijan.
