Aussies just miss medals in London

23 February 2012

Emerging Australian diver Ethan Warren has come agonisingly close to picking up a medal in the 3m springboard at the Olympic test event in London.

The 20-year-old missed out on bronze by a quarter of a point after producing a personal best score in international competition of 511.70.

China's reigning Olympic and world champion He Chong (553.35) won the World Cup event ahead of compatriot Qin Kai (524.00) and Canada's Alexandre Despatie (511.95).

That same trio filled the podium in the 3m at the Beijing Games.

Warren, who won a World Cup round in Germany this month, was a tad fortunate to reach the evening session after being the last diver to qualify for the 12-man final.

"Lucky I did just scrape in and coming into the event I just threw everything on the table," he said.

"I gave it everything I had but just came up .25 short of third but all credit to the boys it was a pretty awesome event."

Compatriots Alex Croak and Melissa Wu and also had to settle for fourth in the 10m synchro as China maintained their dominance of the competition.

Croak and Wu (311.04), silver medallists at last year's world titles in the event, slipped to eighth after two dives before falling short of the medals.

China's Chen Ruolin and Wang Hao (359.58) led home Canada (331.65) and Great Britain (314.40).

Croak was disappointed with the result at the aquatics centre for the Olympics, starting July 27.

"It is not like we dived our best and just missed out on a medal," Croak said.

"There is lots of room for improvement."
