Harrop juggles motherhood with training

8 January 2007

Dual Olympian and recent mum, Loretta Harrop is back in training and preparing for the Olympic selection events in September.

“I am enjoying being a mum, it’s really something special. I am getting back into shape, but my training is not too serious yet.”

Harrop will aim for her first race in February at the Luke Harrop Memorial on the Gold Coast. The rest of her competition schedule for the year is not set in stone.

“I will play it by ear. It can be difficult juggling sleep, training and a four month old baby.”

Having competed at the only two Olympic Games to feature triathlon, Harrop has Beijing in the back of her mind.

“It would be nice to compete in Beijing at my third Olympics and be one of only a few to have competed at all three Games”.

Meanwhile more than 400 local and interstate triathletes are gearing up for the Canberra Capital Triathlon on Sunday 28th January, which is part of the traditional Canberra Capital Triathlon Festival held over the Australia Day weekend.

The event is Race 3 in the 2006 Australian Triathlon Series, which acts as the official selection series for those athletes intending to qualify to represent Australia at the 2007 World Triathlon Championships, Hamburg Germany.

Brad Kahlefeldt will compete in Race 5 of the series in Hobart in February. “I am looking forward to returning to competition, but I won’t peak at the race in Hobart, there are bigger competitions” he said.

Such as one of the world’s richest events in the sport, the Des Moines World Cup in June where US $750,000 is up for grabs. “I want to give that a good go.” His three main goals for 2007 are to win the World Championships, make the Australian team for Beijing and win the cash at Des Moines.

Emma Snowsill returned to training in December and is expected to compete at the Australian sprint championships with Kahlefeldt. She is expected to return to the international circuit at the opening round of the BG World Cup series in Mooloolaba in March.
