Taniele Gofers of NSW won a bronze medal for Australia in women’s water polo in 2008.. The Beijing tournament proved a pressure-packed event for the Aussies. Of its four preliminary games, one was decided by two goals, two by a single goal and the fourth was tied. In the semi-final, a United States goal in the final minute robbed Australia of a chance of playing for a gold medal, losing 9-8. But the team rebounded brilliantly against Hungary in the bronze medal final. The teams were deadlocked at full time and after both periods of extra time. In the penalty shoot-out, it was Australia that held its nerve, wining 12-11. The bronze was Australia’s second women’s water polo medal following its Sydney 2000 gold.
