Simon Orchard made a quick climb into the senior hockey ranks, debuting in 2008 having not made a state team until the U/18s. The athletic midfielder was selected in the initial Beijing Olympic squad having only played five games for Australia, but the 21-year-old did not make the final team.
In 2010 Orchard was a part of the golden year for the Kookaburras that took out the World Cup, Champions Trophy and the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Orchard scored four goals in the final three games in India including a goal in the 8-0 victory in the gold medal match against the hosts.
Having become a regular on the Australian team sheet, Orchard was rewarded with his selection in the London 2012 Games squad as one of 11 Olympic debutants. In the semi-final the world No1 Australians held a 2-1 lead over Germany midway through the second half, but the defending Olympic Champions Germany stormed home to win 4-2. The Aussies bounced back to knock off the British 3-1 in the bronze medal match.
