Samantha Hamill was a standout swimmer at the 2007 Youth Olympic Festival, winning three gold and four silver medals. Hamill then sliced three seconds off her fastest 400m individual medley time to finish second behind Stephanie Rice at the 2008 Olympic Trials. At the same meet Hamill recorded a massive personal best in the 200m butterfly, becoming the fourth fastest Australian time ever behind Jessica Schipper, Susie O’Neill and Petria Thomas. At the Beijing Games Hamill placed 22nd in the 400m IM and 12th in the 200m butterfly.
Hamill returned to Olympic competition in London after finishing second to Jessicah Schipper in the 200m butterfly at the nomination trials. At the 2012 Games she finished sixth in her heat and did not progress to the final.
