Novocastrian Richie Campbell was the youngest member of the men’s water polo team competing in Beijing 2008. Campbell played centre back in the team finishing in eighth position. Like many top Australian water polo players, Campbell travelled to Europe to expand his game.
He returned to compete at his second Olympic Games in London in 2012. After losing three of their first four matches, the Australians knocked off Greece 13-8 to book a spot in the quarter-finals against Serbia. The Aussies took a 7-4 halftime lead before going down 8-11 to the eventual bronze medallists. Campbell finished with eight goals in the competition.
