Michelle Chandler (Cleary)

1974 -

Victorian Michelle Chandler won a bronze medal with the Australian women’s basketball team in 1996. The team caused an upset in the quarter-final by beating Russia 74-70 in overtime. After losing their semi-final to the United States, the Opals faced a re-match with Ukraine in the bronze medal final. In the qualifying round, Ukraine had comfortably beaten Australia 54-48 but the Australians turned the tables in spectacular fashion racing away to win 66-56. The bronze was Australia’s first Olympic basketball medal.
