Melissa Wu was a seasoned international competitor when she arrived at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games at the age of 16- she had already competed at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games as a 13-year-old.
In Beijing Wu stormed through the women’s 10m synchronised platform event alongside Briony Cole to claim the silver medal. The Aussie duo had produced Australia’s best ever result in synchronised diving with Ruolin Chen and Xin Wang from the all-conquering home-team taking the gold. Wu also competed in the individual 10m platform and finished sixth with Chen taking another gold medal.
To compete at her second Olympics in 2012, Wu won a toughly contested Australian nomination trial and earned a berth in the individual 10m platform event. In the thrilling London Olympic final, Wu fell agonisingly short of the podium and finished fourth. Compatriot Brittany Broben, 16, claimed silver behind China’s Chen (who replicated her synchronised/individual golden double in London).
Wu was also a competitor at the 2007 Australian Youth Olympic Festival where she claimed a bronze medal in the 10m platform and came fifth in the 3m springboard.
