Track cyclist Martin Vinnicombe entered his pet event, the men’s 1000m time trial, as the man to beat in Seoul. He had won the world championship title the year before, and was also the reigning Commonwealth Games champion. Because of his ranking, Vinnicombe was the last rider on the track. His time of 1:04.784minutes was good enough to beat everyone in the 30-man field except for Russian Alexander Kirichenko. Vinnicombe also raced in the men’s team time trial. He later missed the 1992 Games when he became embroiled in a doping controversy.
