Lucien Delfour secured the single men’s K1 canoe slalom spot in Rio after a head-to-head battle with Australian Jaxon Merritt at the 2016 Oceania Championships.
At the Games, Delfour was eliminated in the heats after a controversial ruling that left him in 17th, two places outside of the semi-final quota.
Born in Papeete in French Polynesia, he attended school in France before getting his degree in Industrial Maintenance in Pau, France. He moved to Australia in 2010 and became a citizen in 2014.
Although he grew up wanting to be a pilot, Delfour started canoeing in 1997 at age 8. He had his first international podium finish in 2006 when he won silver in the European Junior Championships in France.
