After making his international debut in 2006, Sydneysider Johnno Cotterill won bronze medals at the World League Finals in 2007 and 2008. A year later he was part of the Australian team that won the gold medal at the 2009 World University Games. Having returned home from Greece, where he played professionally, Cotterill was selected to compete at his first Olympic Games in London.
After losing three of their first four matches, the Australians knocked off Greece 13-8 to book a spot in the quarter-finals against Serbia. The Aussies took a 7-4 halftime lead before going down 8-11 to the eventual bronze medallists.
