Sydneysider Joel Dennerley made his international debut in 2008. He spent four years in the United States as the goalkeeper of the USC Trojans college team, where he won four consecutive NCCA Championships. During this time he broke the college's record for all time most saves by a goalkeeper.
Having played in every major tournament outside of the Olympics, Dennerley was given his Olympic opportunity at the London 2012 Games. After losing three of their first four matches, the Australians knocked off Greece 13-8 to book a spot in the quarter-finals against Serbia. The Aussies took a 7-4 halftime lead before going down 8-11 to the eventual bronze medallists. Dennerley made 51 saves in just under 200 minutes of play in London.
