Jim Armstrong

1917 - 1981

Jim Armstrong won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division of the freestyle wrestling at London 1948. In the course of winning three of his five bouts, Armstrong defeated wrestlers from two strong countries in the sport in Iran and Turkey. Two years later, at the Empire Games in Auckland, Armstrong won the heavyweight wrestling title. At the Perth 1962 Empire and Commonwealth Games Armstrong proved that he was still a force in the sport by finishing third in the light heavyweight division. Along with Eddie Scarf and Dick Garrard, he is one of three Australians to win an Olympic wrestling medal. Prior to his international wrestling career, Armstrong played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, as an amateur, between 1939 and 1947. In 1946, he played one game for NSW, and a test match for Australia against the touring British rugby league team.
