Grahame ‘Spike’ Cheney was one of the most popular Aussie medallists in Seoul. The New South Wales boxer won four bouts on his way to reaching the final of the light-welterweight event. In doing so, he became only the second Australian to reach a boxing final, the first being the legendary Snowy Baker in 1908. Cheney’s gold medal bout was decided on points. He split the first two rounds with his Russian opponent, but the judges awarded the third round to the Soviet fighter. Cheney later tasted success as a professional fighter, winning the WBC international welterweight title.
