Daniel Lewis

Daniel Lewis made his Olympic debut at the Rio Games, competing in the men’s 75kg boxing division. Lewis defeated his Polish opponent in a close 2-1 opening bout of the middleweight category, before going down in the second round to Bektemir Melikuziev from Uzbekistan.

Lewis secured his debut after winning the bronze medal at the AIBA Asian/Oceania Olympic qualifying tournament in China.

The Sydney-sider made Australian boxing history when he won the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2011, but Lewis’ Olympic dreams were cut short as he broke his jaw in the Australian boxing team trials for the London 2012 Games.

Despite the setback, Lewis claimed his first open National title in 2013 at just 19 and went on to claim back-to-back titles in 2014, before moving up from the 69kg weight division to the 75kg.

The 22-year-old from Londonderry was denied the chance of a Commonwealth Games medal in 2014 after he was ruled out of competition with a cut above his eye while in great form. His final placing was sixth.

A determined Lewis bounced back with a stellar 2015, being crowned Australian and Oceania Champion as well as claiming gold at the 2015 Doha International Tournament and was named athlete of the tournament.
