Chelsea Lea Gubecka
At only 17 years-old Chelsea Gubecka made her Olympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games in the 10km open water event.
In the rough and tumble of the marathon, the Queenslander fought hard in the waters of Copacabana, finishing 15th. Gubecka, Australia’s only entrant, tried to stay in touch when the pace went up a gear during the final 2.5km but just couldn’t hold on when the leaders took off.
She booked her Olympic debut spot at the final Olympic qualifier in Setabul, Portugal, beating fellow Australian Kareena Lee and finishing fourth overall. The teenager narrowly missing the automatic quota spot at the 2015 World Championships where she finished 13th, with the top 10 taking home Rio qualification.
The youngster made her international debut at just 14 at the 2013 World Championships after she beat dual Olympian Mel Gorman at the Australian Championships that year. She finished 30th in her debut for the Australian Team.
Gubecka, coached by Michael Sage in Brisbane, started learn to swim classes when she just five months old.
