Bronwyn Mayer won a gold medal for Australia in women’s water polo at Sydney 2000. From New South Wales, the driver’s offensive abilities were pivotal to Australia’s success as women’s water polo made its debut at the Games. Mayer was the third leading scorer for Australia in the tournament with six goals. Importantly, she scored in both Australia’s 7-6 semi-final win over Russia and its unforgettable last-second 4-3 defeat of the United States in the final. Mayer returned to the Olympics in 2004, playing under her married name of Smith. (She married former rugby union star Damian Smith, who played for the Wallabies.) The team placed fourth, losing the bronze medal final 6-5 to the United States.
