Father & Daughter duo for AYOF

6 November 2008

Fencing’s Head Coach Vladimir Sher and his 15-year-old daughter Diana have teamed up for January’s Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) in Sydney.

Diana, from the Melbourne suburb of Caulfield, is one of 12 fencers selected to represent Australia but she doesn’t expect any favours from dad.

“There is no special coaching from dad,” Sher said. “Dad gives everyone the same lessons, the same privileges.”

Vladimir recently returned from 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing where he was the coach and manager of Australia’s fencing section. His coaching prowess has rubbed off on his daughter as she is the current Under 17 and Under 20 national champion in epee.

“Winning the Under 20 National Championships in epee earlier this year in Brisbane has definitely been one of my greatest achievements,” Sher said.

“Being selected for the Youth Festival is also a big achievement. It is what I had trained for and at the competition I want to do the best I can and not be nervous.

“Dad encouraged me to start Fencing when I was about 11-years-old,” she said.

“I really like the sport because it’s interesting, challenging. In my opinion it’s different to other sports – you have to think quickly on your feet,” Sher said.

“In a split second it’s thinking what I want to do and then doing it.”

Sher and her teammates will contest the epee discipline of fencing at the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney on January 16 and 17.
